Cox’s Bazar is Bangladesh’s best-known beach destination, with a long sandy shoreline along the Bay of Bengal, seafood restaurants, hotels, and coastal drives. It is often described as the world’s longest natural sea beach, although the length quoted varies by source and by how the coastline is measured. For most visitors, the main decision is where to stay, how much of the coast to explore, and how to plan around weather and sea conditions.

Find a Hotel in Cox’s Bazar

Compare hotel locations, guest reviews, cancellation terms, and the total price before booking. Beachfront accommodation can be convenient, but a room a short walk inland may offer better value. Check the exact location on a map, especially if you plan to visit the beach early in the morning or return after dinner.

When to Visit Cox’s Bazar

November to March is generally the more comfortable period for a beach trip, with lower rainfall than the monsoon months. December and January are popular and can be busy around holidays, so book transport and accommodation early if your dates are fixed.

From roughly June to October, monsoon rain, rough seas, and weather-related transport disruption are more likely. Conditions vary from day to day, so do not assume the sea is safe simply because the beach is busy or the weather looks clear. See our Best Time to Visit Bangladesh guide for seasonal planning across the country.

Best Beaches and Places to Visit

Laboni Beach

Laboni is one of the best-known access areas near the central town and hotel district. It is convenient for a first walk along the shoreline, watching the sunset, and finding nearby shops and food stalls. It can be crowded, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Kolatoli Beach

Kolatoli is close to many hotels, restaurants, and transport services. It is a practical base if you want easy access to the town as well as the beach. Traffic and crowds can build up during peak periods, so allow extra time for short journeys.

Himchari National Park

South of the main town, Himchari is known for its green hills, coastal viewpoints, and forested landscape. It makes a useful half-day outing when combined with a drive along Marine Drive. Stay on permitted paths, follow site instructions, and avoid climbing on wet or unstable rocks.

Inani Beach and Marine Drive

Inani Beach lies south of central Cox’s Bazar and is known for its rocky shoreline and quieter atmosphere compared with the busiest central beach areas. The coastal drive along Marine Drive is part of the experience, with views of hills and the sea. Arrange transport in advance if you want to stop at several viewpoints, and confirm the return plan rather than assuming rides will be easy to find everywhere.

A note on Saint Martin’s Island

Saint Martin’s Island is a separate destination and should not be treated as a spontaneous extension of a beach day. Boat services, visitor limits, overnight-stay rules, and access arrangements can change. Check current official instructions before making plans, and do not travel based on an old schedule or an unverified social-media post.

How to Get to Cox’s Bazar

By air

Cox’s Bazar Airport (CXB) has domestic services, including flights from Dhaka. Flight availability and schedules can change by date and season, so check directly with airlines before finalising your itinerary. Allow enough time to get from the airport to your hotel, particularly during busy holiday periods.

For international arrivals, see our Dhaka Airport Arrival Guide before connecting to a domestic flight.

By train

Direct intercity trains connect Dhaka with Cox’s Bazar Railway Station. Services, operating days, departure times, and seat availability can change; confirm current details through the official Bangladesh Railway website and its e-ticketing service before travel. Book early during peak season and keep your ticket and identification details accessible.

By bus or private car

Intercity buses operate between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar, with journey time depending on traffic, route, and road conditions. A private car offers flexibility for stops but is not necessarily faster. If travelling overnight, choose a reputable operator and confirm the departure point, luggage allowance, and arrival arrangements.

Sea and Beach Safety

The Bay of Bengal can have strong currents and rapidly changing conditions. A calm-looking surface does not guarantee that swimming is safe.

  • Follow warning flags, signs, lifeguard instructions, and directions from local authorities.
  • Swim only where swimming is permitted and supervised, when such supervision is available. Do not assume lifeguards are present along every stretch of beach.
  • Avoid entering the water during rough seas, storms, or when warnings have been issued.
  • Do not swim alone or go far from shore, and keep children within close reach.
  • Be careful around rocks and uneven surfaces, particularly when waves are breaking or the tide is changing.
  • If you are caught in difficulty, call for help and follow lifeguard or rescue instructions rather than attempting a risky rescue yourself.

Keep cash, phones, passports, and other valuables secured while swimming. For general precautions and emergency contacts, read our Bangladesh Travel Safety Guide. For health preparation before your trip, see Bangladesh Travel Health.

Food, Local Transport and Practical Tips

  • Seafood: Seafood is widely available, but choose busy establishments that handle food carefully and serve meals freshly cooked. Ask about ingredients if you have food allergies.
  • Local transport: Agree on the fare before starting a journey when it is not fixed by an app or meter. For longer outings to Himchari and Inani, settle the return arrangements before leaving town.
  • Cash and payments: Carry some Bangladeshi taka for small purchases and transport. Do not assume every stall or driver accepts cards or mobile payments. See our Money and Currency Guide.
  • Clothing: Bring light clothing, sun protection, and something to cover up when visiting religious sites or local communities. Our Cultural Etiquette Guide explains local expectations.
  • Weather: Check the forecast before boat trips and coastal drives. Leave room in your schedule for rain, traffic, or changes to transport services.

Suggested Two-Day Plan

Day 1: Settle into your hotel, explore Laboni or Kolatoli Beach, and watch the sunset if conditions are suitable. Keep the first day flexible if you arrive after a long journey.

Day 2: Start early for Himchari and continue along Marine Drive towards Inani Beach. Confirm transport and return timing in advance, take water and sun protection, and follow local instructions at each stop.

If you have an additional day, use it for a slower beach visit or another locally recommended excursion rather than trying to fit too many distant stops into one schedule.

Plan the Rest of Your Bangladesh Trip

Cox’s Bazar can fit into a wider trip that starts in Dhaka and continues to other regions. These guides can help you connect the pieces:

Before departure, check current transport schedules, weather, local restrictions, and beach conditions. Official local notices and on-the-ground instructions should take priority over older travel information.
